Judith Sturgis, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2026, in Beaumont, TX. Born on September 16, 1942, Judith lived a life marked by warmth, generosity, and a remarkable ability to connect with others. Her presence brought light and comfort to all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Judith possessed a truly compassionate spirit, always eager to help others and engage in heartfelt conversations. She was deeply devoted to her faith, actively participating in bible studies at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, where she also sang in the choir and joyfully served as a greeter. Judith truly never met a stranger, and her genuine love for spending time with friends created lasting bonds throughout her life.

Her interests were as varied as they were vibrant. Judith was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, and found great joy in cooking for her loved ones. She enthusiastically attended sporting events to cheer on her grandchildren. In her high school years, she was a spirited cheerleader, sang in the choir, and played the clarinet in the band. A testament to her strength and resilience, Judith was also a 40 year breast cancer survivor.

Judith's greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Jay Sturgis of Port Neches; her daughter, Jaylyn Brisendine; and her sons, Jason Sturgis and his wife, Kathie, and Jeramy Sturgis. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, Brytni Borel and her husband, Tony, Kathryn Sturgis, Anna Sturgis, Kasey Sturgis, Brett Sturgis, Bailey Iobst and her husband Sam, and Colby Brisendine, as well as her beloved great-grandchildren, Bryson Borel, Brooklyn Borel, and Tatum Borel. She is also survived by her brother, Barry Hovel, and sister-in-law, Jenean Hovel. Judith was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Dorothy Hovel; her brother, Dennis Hovel; her sister, Sharon Scheurman; her sister-in-law, Janell Hovel; and her brother-in-law, John Scheurman. Her kindness, laughter, and loving spirit will be profoundly missed by all who were touched by her life.

Judith will be remembered with a visitation on August 5, 2026 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm and a Funeral Service to follow beginning at 5:00 p.m.at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home, 1605 Avenue H, Nederland, Texas. Interment will take place at a later date in Haxtun, Colorado.

Judy was always so positive. She was a wonderful mom. My son and Jermey grew up together and remain close friends. My favorite story about Judy was the year the boys were in middle school and decided to participate in the Power Puff football game. Judy outfitted each boy with one of her wigs. They were something to see. It was a wonderful time. The boys were always welcome in her home and enjoyed going there. Thank you, Judy, for all the early memories.

Everyone says Momo was the sweetest lady, and she truly was. I was so lucky to have her as my grandmother. Every memory I have with her is filled with joy, from all the yummy sweets, Christmas Shrinky Dinks, and Easter egg hunts, to the delicious meals and family dinners around the table. She had a way of making everyone feel welcomed, loved, and comfortable. I will miss her kindness, her warmth, and especially my pen pal, those little conversations and the special bond we shared mean so much to me. Sending endless love to my sister Brytni, brother in law Tony, my niece, and my nephews. My heart breaks knowing how special and close your bond was with Momo. I’m so sorry I live so far away and couldn’t be around more, but I hope you always know how much I love you all. I will miss you dearly, Momo.

The word that comes to my mind when I think of Judy is “welcoming.” Whenever I saw her, she was always so vibrant and full of joy. She went out of her way to make sure everyone felt welcomed and at home, no matter where she was. My heart goes out to the whole family. Her children were very lucky to have such a fantastic mother and she was the greatest Mamo to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be truly missed.
