James Larry O'Neal, or mostly known as "Poppy-O", was a loving man. He was born in Port Arthur, Texas to James and Ruby O'Neal on November 15, 1950 and departed this life in League City, Texas on August 10, 2026. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He adored his wife Judy and would move heaven and earth if she asked him to. Judy becoming sick herself would also tear him to pieces in the last year of his life

He loved fishing, music, steak, and yelling at the news. He loved fishing, often going with his close friend, Mike Swafford, who was more like a brother than a friend. He enjoyed fishing so much that he took his sons, Timmy and Paul, on a few-day fishing boat trip on a fishing yacht into the Gulf. He was adventurous, having worked on a boat in his teenage years, then managed to almost get kicked off the boat in South Africa, followed by promptly quitting when returning to Galveston.

He was a hard worker, often working overtime while at Texaco and then later at Motiva. He also spent a stint working on the northern slope of Alaska in the Arctic Circle. That adventurous spirit remained as he traveled to Hawaii, Miami, El Salvador, New York, and Yellowstone with Judy, his son Timmy, and his wife Olma. He enjoyed all of these things, but what he enjoyed the most was seeing his grandchildren smile. He would spoil them rotten, bringing them whatever food, cookie, or drink they wanted. He made it his life goal to bring all of them to Disney World, which he accomplished in 2021. His love for music also never left, even after he became severely ill.

While in the ICU, his daughter-in-law, Olma, was reading a book by Santana. He told her he always wanted to see Santana, so they made a deal that if he got out of the ICU, they would go see Santana together in Las Vegas. He was discharged from the Hospital and went to see Santana 3 months later in Vegas. Outside of death, that would be the last big adventure.

James is survived by his wife, Judy O'Neal also, his son, Timothy O'Neal, daughter-in-law, Olma O'Neal, and his stepsons, Paul E. Bienvenue and Jeff Rankin. James was the beloved grandfather to Maya O'Neal, Lauren O'Neal, Ciara Newsom, Braelyn Bienvenue, Dylan Rankin, and Kaylen Rankin.

James is preceded in death by his parents, James Earl and Ruby Keith O'Neal.

Family and friends will be celebrating the life and memory of James with a visitation on Saturday, August 15, 2026 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home, 5601 39th Street, Groves, Texas.

Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of Larry. During his time with us (E&I Depart.) at Motiva, he was a valued mentor and colleague who left a lasting impression on everyone he worked with. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Big O, Tator, Otis, Oney and a host of other nicknames....but he was James Larry ONeal and he was my bud. Just talked with him last week and he seemed fine. Larry never complained much....except for politics. He watched the news religiously. He was abreast on world news and it showed. Larry knew a lot about a lot of things. He was loved by Peggy and all of my children. Sunshine would call him Poppa Smurf....another nickname. I loved fishing with him and hunting with him. I remember we were going deer hunting and he wanted to sight in his new rifle before we left. He showed up at the house with sunglasses on and I started laughing. He said what's so funny Swafford? I said you got a little too close in that scope huh Tator? He took his sunglasses off and sported a beautiful shiner Ali would have been envious of. Laughed til I hurt. Then I remembered him and I painting the whole side of my house and it started raining and washed it all off. I could go on for days about the fun and memories of my buddy. I met him in the 6th grade at old Groves elementary and invited him to spend the night after his father died. We were best friends ever since. I love you Larry and I will miss you dearly. You Rest in Peace buddy. I'll catch up with you on the flip side. Thanks Tim and Uma for all you did for him and Miss Judy. You are God's Angels. Love to all.

I've know Larty from elementary through high school. Larry was a kind, jovial & caring man. I know he always put his loving family first. He was small in stature but had a big heart. You rarely saw Larry without a smile & loved his laugh. It's hard to lose another classmate too soon. He will be loved & missed by all that knew him. I can remember going to Darrell's house ofter when Darrell & his mom made meatballs & gravy(saucef or us non-Itailians!) The best & lots of friends were always invited. No one was ever turned away. Larry was a constant there. As were so many that are gone now. Hope you're with all your friends & fishing up a storm Larry. I'll always remember you sweet nature & the smile & laugh that seldom wasn't there. Rest now my friend! I'll have fond memories to last a lifetime!

I worked with "Big O" at Motiva. I knew about him long before I met him. He had an incredible reputation. We shared an office together. He was always a character, made the work day go by quickly with his humor and smile. He was also one of the hardest working men in the refinery. He knew more about the control system than most others. He loved to solve big issues, and see things running well. He left a huge void when he retired. He will definitely be missed.

It’s me again. I forgot Darrel Guarnerie(sp) one of Larry’s really good friends. My sister Suzanne and Larry were born 2days apart, our mothers in same hospital room. Got to tell about the time I pumped Larry on my handlebars over the RAINBOW BRIDGE. Then we had to come back over it. He wasn’t as excited about coming back. We were in GODS hands then, we made it back to the corner of our street and the FRONT AXLE on my bike broke!!!!! Thank you JESUS

We grew up across the street from each other. Larry,Big O,Crackerjack, some of the names he went by. My grandfather named him Crackerjack. He would take me fishing and always ask Crackerjack to go. Larry is my little BROTHER. We did everything together along with Chip and Steve Osborne,Bill Sealy,Mike Swafford,Larry Balsano,Lenard Wood,Robert Orena. I know I am leaving a bunch out. Larry was friends with whole group of boys in all of groves, that were around our age. That’s the way it was in this WONDERFUL CITY back then. I loved the whole family,Mr. Oneal(Jimmy)Ruby(His Mother) Joyce (sister) were like family growing up. My sincere condolences to TIM AND THE FAMILY. HE IS IN GODS HANDS AND HE IS OK. LOVE YOU LITTLE BROTHER!!!
